This blog was created following the first UPU-AFI workshop on financial inclusion and postal banking. It is maintained by the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union.
Our aim is to promote continuous exchanges on the best financial inclusion practices through the Posts.
The Universal Postal Union (UPU) is an intergovernmental organization and a UN specialized agency. Established in 1874, the UPU is the principal forum for cooperation between governments, Posts and other postal sector stakeholders. Within the UN system, the UPU works to ensure that the combined physical, electronic and financial networks maintained by Posts create ideal conditions for the development of economies and societies and of electronic commerce, and help to close the digital divide.
The postal network, with 657 000 post offices around the world, reaches the most remote areas of the developing world and the UPU wants to build on that strength to help the poor, in accordance with its mission and the Millennium Development Goals. Our objective is to provide citizens of rural areas in developing countries with basic financial services (postal savings accounts, postal bank accounts) and a secure, reliable, efficient and affordable service for international and national money orders.
